We have begun working on a Cloud Block Storage solution that will enable customers to scale their storage independently from their compute. As part of our planning, we would love to understand your storage needs.

Please help by taking this short survey about your block storage needs. Thanks!

        • Cloud Block Storage, powered by OpenStack – available in preview, this new solution is designed to give customers highly elastic raw storage and a choice between a high performance (leveraging solid state disks) or a standard lower-cost block storage solution.

        ...

Is this OpenStack available to us now, or will we need to migrate to t anew infrastructure?

I have to say this is the single reason I have been shopping around at other services and floating the idea of moving away from Rackspace cloud. I love the service and support and hate to leave but if this feature isn't added soon I will have to find another host.

@acgann @Dwain Ehler. Thats weird I was told it was still a while off (Q1 next year). I didnt ask anything about the beta as I am only really interested in the final thing. I will open a ticket in the next few days and post the result. In the message I will ask that someone high up is asked the question as it seems different depending on who you talk to. Hopefully Megan Wohlford will see these messages and also say something. I need to decide in the next few month where to host an application and because of storage Rackspace Cloud just isnt an option.

I've also had confirmation from support on Feb 29th. :Tentatively speaking, they will be looking into starting an invite-only private beta within the next couple of months. When they're ready to look for users, they will post on the forum itself."

That is surprising. You may want to double check. They're in beta now for Cloud Block Storage. It will likely go into a public beta, and then production use. I can't speak for sure, but typically their betas run about 3 months. So most likely this will drop publicly around August. Now I'm not a Rackspace Admin, so don't take that as gospel, but I do work with their teams frequently on advanced topics.

Every time I have a free disk space issue on Rackspace I go back to the Amazon website to see and dream about EBS. If it was easy I would have switch just for that.
It's just an honest opinion - I love your service but I really need something like that. If doesn't come we will have to switch one day or another.

Cloud block storage sounds like a no brainer, again it feels like Amazon is unfortunately a few years ahead in terms of EBS. Same can be said for their better security (service groups) and monitoring, although I heard the cloudkick acquisition is going to bring some use to the Rackspace cloud shortly which I welcome!

Can we get an update on this feature? There hasn't been much communication, maybe an ETA or an indication of how far along in the development you are.

Then there's the backup issue. If we have more than 80GB on our local machine, volume snapshots will silently fail and then we don't have any more backups at all. So, you can't give us more than 80GB without also giving us a decent backup solution to handle those cases where local volume snapshots would fail.

      • DimitriDimitri commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

You definitely need to address this issue. 620gb of storage is supposed to be the cloud? Seriously, I have 5tb of storage sitting in my Drobo on my desktop. This isn't anywhere close to being enterprise ready until the storage issue is addressed. I don't need fast storage or tons of RAM, but I do need an 8gb server with a few tb of storage for my database for disaster recovery purposes. That isn't possible in the Rackspace Cloud. The whole purpose of the cloud is elasticity, being able to scale out and grow as needed. I can't use Rackspace Cloud until this is addressed even though I would like to.

Can we get an update on this project, details and a rough ETA? It's been months without an update.
Also the scope of the survey scope is too narrow. My main use case would be to have a large storage device that can be mounted to several machines via NFS.
It doesn't need to be fast as local storage but I would need 1TB+ of mountable storage for asset storage, without having to write specifically to cloud files.
Basically an Amazon EBS equivalent, mounting a large volume on a small 1GB or less machine to act as an NFS server would work.

I can do this with the 620GB machine right now but a 16GB Ram and CPU cost makes it a very expensive shared storage device.
        For a pair (backup) it's $1400 a month.. that's $2.15/GB per month. That's a far cry from Amazon EBS at $0.10/GB

It is a rather important feature and has become a common practice for many cloud providers (i.e. Amazon Ec2, Elastic Hosts and others). Would love to see it become available on Rackspace to simplify setups.

My biggest need in this area is fast storage to support a busy RDBMS with multiple mount points for things like logs, data, OS, etc.

IO wait is probably my biggest issue with the RS cloud, in terms of perfromance, right now.

      • Ben JohnsonBen Johnson commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

We need this as well. I'm seeing this start to pop up with other cloud providers - SoftLayer, Krypt.

The ability to add storage independently of RAM is critical for me. I need to be able to do this EASILY - just as easily as resizing my server. Local storage is preferred.

Without this ability, I'll be forced to leave the Rackspace cloud in a few months.

      • acgannacgann commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Agreed, mounting the same block across multiple servers would be amazing! Gives our devs one place to put media files.
