Create a dedicated database service
To a point MySQL servers are an easy to create, easily scalable commodity that doesn't need to be on the hosting servers. Up to certain limits why not create MySQL servers for users to just access and use as needed. Then bill for exact disk space and CPU/Memory used? If done right the infrastructure could be kept secure and up to date by you while allowing for fast scalable and dependable DB systems by your clients.

Rackspace has a Cloud DB in beta, but it's API-only, so I'll wait for the panel controls before testing it. Has someone jumped on the beta? It would be nice to get some feedback from real users.

Rackspace definitely need to add this to their offering. For me it has to offer mongodb to be useful. The more managed it is the better in terms of load balancing/replication, automated backup/durability management and overall service monitoring/speed.

I feel like I'm ******* on about Amazon constantly as they've already done most of the feedback requests, but if Rackspace can do RDS but put their fanatical support behind it, that is going to be a huge win in my opinion ;)
I know this is in beta now but am hoping it is prioritised, I'm surprised this only has 200 votes currently...

If you are going to do this for MongoDB give users the option for what DB technolony and also enabled memcache and allow users to make ***** and master and load balance these databases... thus a real cloud database solution which makes them scalable up and down etc

You should do this for MongoDB as well, since many people will be replacing MySQL with MongoDB for most common applications where transactions are not critical.

I would also like to see this for PostgreSQL as MySQL has no equivalent for e.g. postGIS.

We now have an "invitation only" Private Beta of our new Cloud Database service...head over to the blog post and follow the survey link to request acces to the beta: http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/blog/2011/12/01/announcing-the-rackspace-mysql-cloud-database-private-beta/

@Dylan, thanks for the feedback. I will answer your question about managed cloud support in two parts. First, we are working on a Rackspace hosted and supported opensource database service built on top of OpenStack- http://wiki.openstack.org/DatabaseAsAService. The service is currently in development and we hope to have a private beta of the service soon. Once the service is generally available, it will have both core and managed support levels. Second, we cannot currently support every service offered through the Cloud Tools program such as Xeround and others. Xeround and other third party services are available on the Rackspace cloud, but are supported directly by the company offering the service and are not affiliated with Rackspace Fanatical Support.

@Daniel, I've got a cloud managed account and when I signed up I was told that Xeround or any other 3rd party database service would not be supported with my managed account. Why not offer Xeround or similar to your managed customers with full support?

And it should be a pay as you go service only like cloud files not with a fixed upfront payment like cloud sites.

But looking at it, it seems like it would fulfill the requirement. You guys just need a partnership and to help them lower the costs to be in line with their Amazon offering. Even better if there was a link to their admin from your admin.

@Dylan, can you elaborate your question? As of today, Xeround is available on the Rackspace Cloud but is developed, operated, and supported directly by Xeround. It is not related to the database service described here.

Managed mySQL would be quite nice, take the load/backup responsibility off me so I can focus on code development :-)

With Rackspaces support of the Drizzle project this seems more apt to become a Drizzle database. We would love to see some form of SQL database service. Managing backups, load balancing, slave replication, and failovers is really painful and not something application focused companies want to deal with.

What about a Downgrade?. Would Rackspace Cloud deduct $20 from my monthly billing if I move all my databases to an external service like FathomDB?
